In three sentences can you give us an overview of what “Rebecca Ann Design” is and what you do?

Rebecca Ann Design is a graphic design and branding studio that specialises in developing impactful brand identities. I solve problems with creativity, creating considered visual solutions for forward-thinking brands.

We are in love with our new Acorn Studio branding. Can you talk to us a little bit about your process of giving us a makeover?

For sure! It starts with client discussion and research then I love immersing myself in an idea and making a huge mess in the process. From there, it’s continual development and refinement to strip the noise back and deliver a concept in the simplest, most strategic way possible.

In your opinion, what are a few mistakes or certain things people forget to consider when looking to brand themselves/business?

This is a big question!

I think a lot of people still consider branding as simply a logo and colour palette but it’s so much more than that. Branding is how your audience interprets your business - at every level. It's the why, what and how of your business DNA. As humans, we are looking for an emotional connection, we resonate with brands and align ourselves with those that reflect our own personal values. So spend time developing your complete brand identity.

Your brand identity should also align with your ideal customer. Discover who they are, and what sort of messages through which type of media they will be most open to listening to. Your target market is much narrower than you may think so don’t make the mistake, as many small businesses do, of thinking too broadly.

Lastly, consistency is king! The fastest way to lose your hard-earned customers is with an inconsistent experience.

What is the best thing about being a Mum/parent running her own company? What is one of the most challenging?

The biggest reward and challenge almost go hand in hand - working for myself gives me flexibility but also limits my time. My biggest challenge is usually when the kids are unwell - I often still have several deadlines to meet and that’s when I find myself wishing I had sick days, annual leave or immediate back-up on hand to ease that time pressure but in saying that, I’m fortunate to have a lot of flexibility around when and how I work, which means I can be really present with my kids as they grow.

What were 3 things you wish you knew when you started going out on your own that you have now learnt and put into practice?

  • Accounting. Use Xero. Get a good accountant. It just makes life easier.

  • Have a good backup system.

  • I shouldn’t take on every potential client - It doesn’t take much for me to get too busy.

What is one of your non-negotiables when it comes to your family?

I have two toddlers so there is a lot of negotiating going on in our house. The first absolute non-negotiable that comes to mind is probably “put on your seatbelt” and honestly, almost everything else has room for movement.

Can you tell us how you met Erin and became part of the Acorn Studio Family?

We met years ago through a mutual acquaintance, I was freshly self-employed and she was such an inspiration to me! Shortly after my (now) husband and I got engaged and there was no question as to who I wanted to photograph our wedding, the rest is history.

We love the fact that you get photos of yourself and your family every year. Can you tell us why this is so important for you?

Photos are one of my most treasured possessions. Life happens, and as corny as it sounds, I know I’ll never get tomorrow back. I love Erin’s natural approach to family sessions - they’re taken where we spend a lot of time (usually the beach or at home) and have a beautiful relaxed energy about them. When I look back on our photos they always feel like “us” and capture how perfectly imperfect life with small children often is. Another bonus is that I’m actually in the photos too!!! (Mums, get in more photos!)

In a visually saturated world where everyone is jumping on different trends, what is one thing someone or a business could do with their branding to make it stand out?

People are intrinsically seeking connection and authentic brands they can relate to, so talk to your audience, show up regularly online, and let them develop a connection with you. Everyone has a unique perspective and point of difference so use it to stand out and attract a like-minded following.

When it comes to creating unique brands and design elements for your clients, where do you draw inspiration from?

All over the place! I have over 4,500 screenshots on my phone of various colour palettes (often inspired by nature), font combinations and layouts. I enjoy following a range of designers including fashion bloggers, interior designers and architects.

What advice were you given when you were younger that you still live by today?

When I was younger I used to do athletics and my Dad would stand towards the finish line and yell “Dig it in”.  He’s one of my biggest lifetime supporters and that phrase has become the little voice in the back of my head.

What has 2021 taught you?

2021 has taught me to value my time and surround myself with great people.

What is your pro tip for self-care?

Oh, self-care is not something I practice a lot of at the moment unfortunately, my life is a little too full. However, lighting a candle always makes me feel like I’m doing something for myself.

What is one thing that you couldn’t live without?

My whānau.

What music gets you vibing?

I’ve recently discovered the “NOW that’s what I call music 1-50” playlist on Spotify which is bringing back all kinds of nostalgic feels.

Who are you stalking on socials right now?

@fionagoddard_ - she’s got impeccable style!

What is your current life motto?

Make it simple but make it significant.

What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?

Whales! I spend whale too much time watching whale videos, and the best thing - my socials KNOW I love whales, so the algorithms just keep feeding them to me. It’s great!

What is one of the best or most worthwhile investments you’ve ever made? Could be an investment of money, time, energy, etc.

My path into graphic design was a little unorthodox. Rather than getting a degree, I went through a graphic design apprenticeship. During this, I learnt the technical ins and outs of several print processes, techniques and finishes which has been invaluable.

What is next for “Rebecca Ann Design”?

I’m in the process of working out what Rebecca Ann Design 2.0 looks like. Whilst it’s been a super rewarding and successful journey so far, I truly do feel that this is only the beginning.
