So Dave, what’s your story?

I’m 29, and am the founder and managing director of Gravity Events along with my other half Erin as Creative Director. I grew up in Timaru, moved to Dunedin for university where we founded Gravity Events, I met Erin and have never looked back.

How did you hear of Acorn Studio?

I was one of the first to hear about Acorn Studio - I helped Erin start it so I’ve been around since day one!

What’s the best thing about working with your wife?

We’re both creative people and my favourite thing about working together is that we get to create together. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve built so far, and I can’t wait to find out what we’ll do next.

Any tips for working with your wife?

Remember that you’re still best friends at the end of the day!

What inspired you to begin Gravity Events?

When I was at University I helped organise a student ball. There were almost a dozen different suppliers and while they were all great at what they did, it was a nightmare to email and coordinate so many different people and products. I saw the Audacious Student Business Startup competition and decided to enter with the idea of making it easier to organise great events.

Tell us about Gravity Events

Gravity offers an all-in-one solution for just about any kind of event. We have everything from sound, lighting & LED screens, to DJs, photographers, and Instaprint Photo Booths. And everything in between! We love to come up with creative outside-of-the-box ideas and help our clients bring their event to life no matter how big or small it is.

What has been crucial to the growth of Gravity Events?

Making our clients feel like we’ve made their life easier, investing in lots of new equipment to make it all happen, and building a team that loves what they do and shares our vision.

What advice were you given when you were younger that you still live by today?

When I was in high school I was given a book called Every Bastard Says No which told the outrageous story of Geoff & Justine Ross and 42 Below Vodka. My favourite quote from the book was “bite off more than you can chew and chew like fuck”.

What has the last year taught you?

Expect the unexpected and be ready to change your plans at the drop of a hat. In a post-Covid world it’s never been more crucial to be adaptable and agile.

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?

My amazing wife Erin 😉

What is your current life motto?

Your comfort zone will kill you. We even have a giant LED neon sign of this in our house.
