How To Plan Your Proposal

So you’ve got the ring, now you need the plan. No need to stress or overthink it. Read this blog and we promise you’ll feel more prepared.

While there aren’t specific rules for how to propose if there’s one thing we can recommend, it would be to do what feels natural to both you and your partner. There is no need to force anything that doesn’t fit who you are as a couple. Follow our guide below to see how we can plan and work together to capture your special moment.

What kind of proposal will it be?

Think about what your partner would enjoy, would they prefer something romantic and intimate? Or would they prefer a big grand gesture? Maybe it's something in between that suits the both of you perfectly. What you decide will determine the execution of the plan and the whole feeling of the big moment when you finally get to pop the question. If you’re not sure where on the scale of intimate to extravagancy your proposal should sit, we’re more than happy to help you figure it all out via a discreet chat.

Explore Location Options

Once you have decided what kind of proposal you want, we can help you figure out what location would suit your proposal plan. There are endless amounts of locations that you can choose from depending on the look and feel you want to go for. Think about going somewhere that may hold some sentimental value to you both. Maybe a beach where you had your first date, or somewhere that connects a shared interest such as a hiking trail. Or maybe you’re both just big on wine and cheese, so set up a picnic at your S/O favourite scenic spot. Location scouting is one of our expertise, so don't hesitate to ask for guidance on your options for picking the best location.

How do you want it captured?

There are two ways we can do this, and the choice is completely up to you. As we offer couples shoot as a service, we could be doing this and pretend that all it is is a couples shoot! But right at the end when your S/O thinks it’s all wrapped up, you drop the knee (or however you feel comfortable doing it) and pop the question. This option is good for us to be able to capture the moment more intimately as we can get as close as we need. Alternatively, we can go into spy mode so that we are completely out of sight. Whether this means hiding amongst bushes, or dressing up extra touristy, we’ll do anything to make it work until you give us the signal to get the camera out!

Set the time + date!

Picking your date is completely up to you and what will work for you and your S/O. Timing is key and you will need to think ahead. If you have a date in mind, ask yourself what your S/O might be doing leading up to the proposal day - you don’t want to do them dirty and surprise them in the wrong way. You’ll know when the timing is right so that your S/O can be 100% in the moment with nothing else on their mind. In terms of the time of day, you have a few different options depending on weather. Our favourite time to shoot is sunrise or sunset - the light is absolutely magical and will transform the romance of the moment. If weather is grey and dreary, not to worry! The light will be diffused which actually creates a gorgeous, soft look on your images.

Confirm Plan + Have a Plan B

By now you should have your proposal plan pretty solid, location scouted, and a time and date locked in. On the day we will be in discreet contact to confirm all the details thoroughly and double confirm the signals so we know when the proposal will happen. However, as important as it is to lock in your plan, it’s just as important to have a Plan B up your sleeve that you can confidently execute if Plan A doesn’t quite work out due to unforeseen circumstances. This is something we can chat about together prior to the proposal to ensure the day still runs smoothly and we can capture your magical moment.

Pop the question!

We made it! The day is running smoothly and your S/O hasn’t the slightest clue what is about to happen next. You’ve given us the signal and you’re ready to ask the love of your life to be your forever. Our camera is out and your ring is out, so all you have to do now is pop the question!
